Lender Strategy
Why the Right Lender Matters More Than the Credit Score
A deal that gets declined by one lender can be approved by another. Understanding why — and how to use that knowledge — is one of the most valuable skills in special finance.
Not All Lenders Are the Same
In special finance, different lenders have very different programs, appetites, and guidelines. One lender may specialize in recent bankruptcies. Another may be strong on first-time buyers with limited credit history. A third may work well with customers who have older derogatory items but strong current stability.
Submitting a deal to the wrong lender — one whose program isn't designed for that type of credit — is one of the most common and most preventable reasons deals get declined. The customer may be approvable. The deal may be structured correctly. But if it goes to the wrong lender, it gets declined anyway.
The Cost of Wrong Lender Selection
Wrong lender selection doesn't just cost a single deal. It can damage the dealership's relationship with that lender, create a negative record for the customer, and waste time that could have been spent finding the right approval path.
In a well-run special finance operation, lender selection is a deliberate decision based on the specific credit profile, the deal structure, and a clear understanding of each lender's program. It's not guesswork.
Lender Mix and Lender Coverage
A dealership's lender mix — the set of lenders it has relationships with — determines which credit profiles it can serve. Gaps in lender coverage mean that certain types of customers simply can't be financed, regardless of how well the deal is structured.
Evaluating the current lender mix, identifying gaps, and developing a stronger strategy around the credit profiles the dealership actually sees is one of the most impactful things a dealership can do to improve its special finance performance.
"The right deal still needs the right lender. Knowing which lender to call for which customer is one of the most valuable skills in special finance."
